Starting Your DIY Journey

First thing first: Don't be scared! I promise that you are completely capable of these DIY projects and money saving hacks. So how do you get started with DIY projects? I am glad you asked! Here are ten tips I have found that help channel my creativity!

P.S: I have listed some examples where I gain inspiration.

1) Shift your mind: The first step to becoming a DIY pro is by shifting your mind. Release your creative side! Let your imagination be free!! Look for new ways to be creative and innovative. Start to ask questions like, "Can I fix this, mend it, or recycle it?" You never know what you can save or make just by being creative!

2) Be a student: Be willing to learn from others. The best way to gain knowledge is to know that you can always learn from someone else.

3)The internet is your best friend. There is so much free information available just through the internet. So many people have DIY blogs or websites (like this one!). Start to researcher other fellow creative people to learn and gather ideas!

  • Fall for DIY

4) Pinterest: Pinterest is a great way to learn, explore, and create. Pinterest gives me ideas for recipes, crafts, projects, art, and tons more. I love Pinterest because it is real people who come together to create and share. It is like a virtual craft scrapbook. Many of the pins are connected to a website that will teach you how to make a project.

5) Youtube: Youtube is another great tool to learn. Sometimes it is nice to have a professional teach you how to do something. After all, they have taken the time to learn a skill very well. A lot of people make youtube videos demonstrating their craft. Youtube is great because you can always pause or rewind the video to watch a difficult part again.

  • Pick Up Limes

6) Snapchat and Instagram. Oddly enough these two social media accounts are a handy way to learn DIY projects. Both media sites have "how to videos" that are usually very brief. Instagram has accounts that are dedicated to DIY videos. Snapchat has snapchat stories that also demonstrate DIY videos.

7) Learn to Thrift: Thrift stores are a life saver. My time at college has taught me to appreciate a good bargain. I have bought so many quality articles of clothing for a price that was basically criminal. Thrift stores are great because you can buy cheap materials to make something new. For example, say I needed a plain white shirt for a DIY shirt project. I would not want to spend a lot of money on a shirt so that is where a thrift store is super handy! Some thrift stores have cheap craft supplies like yarn and fabric.

  • Savers

  • Consignment Shops

8) Learn to Sew: I promise you that sewing is a very handy skill to have. Let's be real. Clothes break and rip (especially when you buy cheap clothes like I do). Often these small holes just need a little mending. I have saved many shirts and dresses from the trashcan just by knowing how to sew.

9) Be patient with yourself! It is ok to not "nail" something the first time! Just take your time as you watch and learn. Remember you are doing this for you.

10) Have Fun! These hacks can make your life easier but they are supposed to be an outlet for your imagination and creative side. Remember to enjoy the creative process.

Now You're Ready To Start A Project!!
